Announcing The Guitar Program
at Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp
August 5-12 and August 12-19, 2007

Program Leaders:  William Coulter and John Knowles

Over the years, RMFC has attracted more and more guitar campers.  So for the first time, we are having not one, but two, world-class guitar instructors, William Coulter and John Knowles.  Both have taught at RMFC before, receiving enthusiastic praise from the campers.

There will also be one or more instructors for novice players and complete beginners.

The guitar program features a full-immersion week of guitar instruction.  Of course, guitar-campers can also attend any of the other workshops, and any camper can attend any of the guitar classes.

Here’s a description of the guitar program in John Knowles’ own words:

“Bill and I have designed a guitar program that offers classes in accompaniment and solo playing at all levels. Topics include basic fiddle/vocal accompaniment, swing accompaniment, and solo playing in a variety of styles.

“I would describe myself as a solo fingerstyle player with a dash of singer/songwriter thrown in. I play a variety of styles including folk, pop, jazz, ragtime, country and classical. You can learn more about my teaching approach at www.johnknowles.com where you can download a sample intermediate lesson. You can also hear audio clips of some of my advanced work.

“Bill and I are believers in getting beginners off to a good start so we will both be teaching basic classes. My approach to working with beginners can be seen in the instructional video "Chet Atkins: Get Started on Guitar." http://guitarvideos.com/video/dvd/99803dvd.htm

“The RMFC community is one of the best I have seen in my twenty-plus years of teaching at music camps. There will be plenty of jamming opportunities which will help us all build our confidence and our musicianship. And we will have fun way past our bedtime.

“If any campers or potential campers have any questions about the Guitar Program at RMFC, please contact me.” john@johnknowles.com

And in the words of Bill Coulter:

“I will be teaching mostly Celtic style accompaniment, finger-style solo, and technique building exercises - probably most of the time in DADGAD tuning - although for the more novice and beginner players I can also teach in standard tuning. Check out my web-site for a taste of what I do: www.williamcoulter.com

"If you have any more questions at all please let me know." billski@ucsc.edu

Guitar students in our program will also be able to enjoy the same extensive after-class program as all other music students at RMFC. This includes daily jam sessions, contra- and square dances, and faculty concerts. See the RMFC main webpage for descriptions of these various activities, for logistical information, and for instructor bios.

Please check this page in the future for more details about the Guitar Program.
