Announcing The Rocky Mountain Banjo Program
at Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp
Week 1 August 5-12, 2007

Program Leader: Ken Perlman

The Rocky Mountain Banjo Program features a full-immersion week of banjo instruction for serious old-time / clawhammer banjo players, with classes taught by two of today's noted performers and teachers. Students will have the option of taking up to four banjo classes each day, each devoted to a different aspect of playing. The program is designed to expose students to intensive instruction in technique, repertoire, and ensemble playing, and to offer varied perspectives on style and banjo-role.

The Banjo Program offers five classes of banjo instruction per day, including a beginners' class aimed at the general music student. One of our classes takes the form of a "jam workshop" that focuses on strategies and techniques to help banjo players and fiddlers work well together.

This year, we'll have two full-time banjo instructors, as great clawhammer and Appalachian-style fiddle player Kirk Sutphin joins Ken Perlman in the program. Here's how the day will probably be structured.

Session 1.
Clawhammer Technique (AKA "Banjo Boot Camp"), taught by Ken Perlman: Work on proper right and left hand technique in order to grow as a player. Topics covered are drop and double thumbing, hammer-ons, pull-offs, triplets and ornaments, playing up the neck, improvisation, and playing in alternative meters.

Session 2.
Repertoire Class, taught by Ken Perlman. Ken teaches tunes that employ the skills taught in Banjo Boot Camp.

Session 3.
Introduction to Clawhammer Banjo (for novice players), taught by Kirk Sutphin.

Session 4.
The Banjo as Drum-on-a-Stick, taught by Kirk Sutphin. The focus here is on rhythm and accent as central elements of clawhammer.

Session 5.
Special Jam Workshop for banjo players and fiddlers, taught by Ken Perlman and Kirk Sutphin. Learn what it takes to mesh effectively with other musicians in the old time music idiom. We'll set a moderate pace, establish a great groove, and focus on tunes that are both accessible and infectious.

Session 6. On your own!

Evening Activities: Banjo students in our program will also be able to enjoy the same extensive after-class program as all other music students at RMFC. This includes daily jam sessions, contra- and square dances, and faculty concerts. See the RMFC main webpage for descriptions of these various activities, for logistical information, and for instructor bios.

Hope to see you in August
